Standardized Ultrasound Technique and Results Reporting

This is a project to standardize ultrasound imaging technique and reporting of results for children with suspected appendicitis.

OVERVIEW

CONTRIBUTORS

Inconsistencies in sonographic technique and in the reporting of results can impair the diagnostic utility of the study, leading to the need for further diagnostic imaging. Further imaging is associated with increased cost, radiation exposure (for CT), and treatment delay.

TARGETED PROBLEM STATEMENT

  • Improved quality and consistency of ultrasound results and communication of radiology findings
  • Improved accuracy in the diagnosis of appendicitis due to improving the quality of ultrasound data used to determine the composite risk for the Appendicitis Diagnostic Tool

OPPORTUNITY

Create a standard ultrasound technique and results reporting protocol for children with suspected appendicitis who require imaging workup.
